Books!
So I just came from another stint at Borders. While consuming a medium caramel latte and The Largest Rice Krispy Treat Ever (seriously. it was as long and as wide as my hand, and about four finger-widths thick. I'm amazed I finished the damn thing. My stomach resents me a little bit right now.), I finally finished For a Few Demons More by Kim Harrison.
I personally prefer Kim Harrison's earlier books in the Rachel Morgan series. She reminds me a bit of Laurell K Hamilton, although the writing certainly hasn't deteriorated as horribly. Still, as both series progress, the metaphysical stuff each female protagonist has to deal with gets more and more complicated, making the plot harder and harder to follow. I'm crossing my fingers that I won't grow to despise Rachel the way I've come to be bored by Anita Blake. We are only at Book 5 by Kim Harrison though. As I recall, I didn't start hating Anita until at least Book 8 or 9 from Laurell.Still, an enjoyable read.
I was in a bit more of a improve-your-mind mood tonight. I perused the reference section, reading first through a debunking of urban legends, then attempting to decipher an explanation of feng shui-ing my bedroom (something about putting more plants into my Wealth Gua? I have no idea what a Gua is, but it has something to do with a Bagua. Which makes an equal amount of sense to me.
I finally settled on this little gem:
Here's the thing; I am a trivia whore. I love learning lots of little bits of history, literature, whatever the hell people throw at me. This particular book is set up like an SAT section, with multiple choice questions and the extremely well informed answers in the back.
I love this type of thing.
I realize I'm a freak.
Still, this book is great for me to "read". I'm both learning and testing my knowledge of certain events (surprisingly, my knowledge of world history wasn't as dismal as I expected it to be. I'm also expecting to KICK ASS when I hit the 'life science' section, but I haven't gotten there yet.) The section of U.S. History was first, and I'd like to thank my AP History teacher for not letting me down in that arena.
But like I was saying, I like learning this way. I can learn the basics of a situation from the answer section, and if something peaks my interest, I can always hit a different part of the bookstore to find out more.
I only made it halfway through the second section (world history) before my brain started to overheat. As enjoyable and engrossing as testing myself was, after a certain point my grey matter is thoroughly saturated.
I also skimmed this:
Interesting questions, but as I said, a very easy read, so I mostly skipped to the conclusions at the end of every chapter dealing with each question. I was primarily interested in the bibliography and the references, since work in the research field has made me very skeptical of any scientific study published and I always want to read the study myself. Sad, ain't it?
Ok, off to bed as it is currently 11:48pm and I have a 5:45am call time for Desperate Housewives tomorrow morning (I believe (SPOILER ALERT) Gaby is marrying her politician boyfriend? But I won't know for sure til tomorrow. All I know is that I'm booked as a wedding caterer. At 5:45 in the fucking morning. Argh.
